The 1882 AJAX was performed at St Andrew’s Hall (later the Theatre Royal).

The cast included James Kenneth Stephen, first cousin of Virginia Woolf, poet and (later) a tutor to the royal family.

Any doubts that may have existed as to the suitability of the Ajax for performances before a modern audience have been set at rest by the enthusiastic reception it received.
